Which Copperfield Models This Applies To

Copperfield crowns break down into two main lines: the pre-formed galvanized steel assemblies found on builder-grade fireplaces from the 1990s through the mid-2000s, and the cast-in-place concrete crowns that Copperfield supplied as repair kits for masonry chimneys. The steel assemblies carry a stamped model prefix, usually “CF-” followed by a four-digit number, located on the underside of the crown lip. Concrete repair kits are unmarked once installed, so we identify them by the 2-inch overhang specification and the 3/4-inch drip edge that were Copperfield’s standard.

Here’s where owners get tripped up: the CF-2200 and CF-2400 series use a 13-inch by 13-inch base flange, while the CF-2600 and CF-2800 jump to 15-inch by 15-inch. Measure wrong, and the replacement crown gaps at the corners. We carry both flange sizes, plus the transition gaskets that Copperfield originally spec’d but most hardware stores don’t stock. For galvanized assemblies, we source OEM-equivalent crowns through our Haven buying network; for concrete repairs, we use HeatShield CrownCoat or pour a new crown with Gelco bonding agents, depending on what the camera shows.

Signs Your Copperfield Crown Repair Is Failing

• Water in the firebox after rain. The crown’s top surface has cracked or the seal between crown and flue tile has failed. Water follows the path of least resistance, which is straight down your flue liner.
• White efflorescence on the exterior brick below the crown. That’s mineral salt left behind when water migrates through the masonry. It means the crown is no longer shedding water outward; it’s absorbing it and pushing it through the brick.
• Rust stains on the chimney face. On the galvanized steel Copperfield crowns, this means the factory coating has breached and the underlying steel is oxidizing. Once rust starts, the crown loses structural integrity fast.
• Spalling brick or deteriorating mortar joints on the top few courses. The crown’s 2-inch overhang is supposed to protect this masonry. When the crown cracks or shrinks, water hits the brick directly, and Orland Park’s freeze-thaw cycles do the rest.
• Musty odor from the fireplace in summer. Even small crown cracks let humid air into the flue, where it sits against the smoke chamber and liner. That moisture breeds odor and accelerates liner deterioration.

What goes wrong when owners push further: climbing a roof to apply sealant without proper fall protection, using hardware-store caulk that can’t handle 200°F flue temperatures, or sealing over a crown that’s actually separated from the flue tile, trapping water underneath. Crown work happens at height, on a surface that may be structurally compromised, next to a live flue. We don’t recommend it.
